The lodge has 12 double cabins, each with its own shower and toilet. They are made by natives with local materials. Cabañas JAMU is located in the species rich Wildlife Reserve of Cuyabeno which has 603,000 hectares of protected forest including primary forest, flooded forest and a unique system of lagoons, deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon Basin bordered by Columbia and Peru. The lodge is surrounded by jungle and is rustic but comfortable with wood pathways, bar and restaurant service, and a hammock lounge.

Cabañas JAMU consists of 9 cabañas, built in a traditional, rustic style with thatched-roofs. Every cabana has two rooms, each with a private, environmental-friendly bathroom. All cabanas are lit naturally with candles to preserve the feeling of being in a remote jungle. Guests can engage in a variety of activities including piranha fishing, nocturnal walks, night caiman watching and more.

ACTIVITIES

Day 1:  Quito - Lago Agrio - El Puente. Flight (10:30 a.m.) or bus ride (the day before 8 hours) to Lago Agrio. Drive from Lago Agrio to El Puente. Take a canoe down the Cuyabeno River to our camp site. Introduction to the tour guide and lunch. Explore the vegetation and animals during the exciting night walk.

Day 2:  After breakfast take the canoe to a local community where most of the day is spent. Help harvest, prepare, and cook yucca bread. Lunch is tasty vegetarian wraps. After lunch hike in the primary forest alongside lines of leaf cutter ants. Forty minutes later the canoe picks the group up and returns everyone to the lodge. Before dinner everyone has a chance to fish for piranha (catch and release), see an anaconda up close in its nest, and search for caiman (small alligator-like reptiles) by flashlight.

Day 3:  Today we leave a little early for a float downstream for morning bird watching and if lucky you may see sloths. In the afternoon the guide leads another jungle hike and explains the use of plants for survival. Hike quietly and listen to the mating calls of birds. Learn something more about insect life in the jungle as the guide points out different ant and termite nests. After dinner there is an opportunity for a night hike to see insects and spiders.

Day 4:   Work up a big appetite paddling dugout canoes in a silent river trip to catch wildlife unawares. Reward yourself and escape the midday heat with a long swim. Remember to reapply your sunscreen! After lunch there is just enough time for the 2 hour trip back upstream to the bridge over the Rio Cuyabeno and the bus back to Quito. Note that it is possible to fly back but it is not recommended because there is only one flight and it requires a very early departure from the lodge - essentially you lose the entire last day except for the canoe trip back upstream.
